TOWN OF OAKLAND - JOB OPENING
Title Position: Truck Driver/Laborer $25.00/hr.
Department: Public Works

Nature of Work
The Truck Driver performs semi-skilled manual labor in the operation of light and moderately heavy trucks and motorized equipment on road construction and repair, and in the snow and ice removal operations of the public works department. Duties include the performance of manual labor tasks in connection with the operation of trucks or during completion of seasonal work projects. This employee handles and operates all truck attachments and carries out assignments with relative ease. He/she may operate larger pieces of equipment, but only on a temporary or emergency basis. He/she participates in loading and unloading work. Work instructions may be received in detail for each job to be performed or may follow an established routine.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates trucks and sanders in the plowing, sanding and snow removal of Town streets.
  • Operates light to moderately heavy trucks in performance of public works duties.
  • May operate other light equipment as needed and may operate heavier equipment such as frontend loaders on an incidental or emergency basis.
  • Operates a light or moderately heavy truck transporting dirt, gravel, wood and construction materials; assists in loading or unloading trucks.
  • Performs varied maintenance work including rebuilding storm drains and culverts, patching and building roads and other general duties.
  • Picks up debris such as blow downs; straightens signs and posts; picks up leaves, brush and other trash.
  • Winterizes trucks and mounts sanders.
  • Assists in general repair and preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment and assists in general maintenance of public works garage.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Ability to get along well with Supervisors, co-workers and the general public.
  • Maintain physical fitness to perform the duties of the job.

Supervision Received & Given
The Public Works Director provides general supervision for the Truck Driver and also reviews his/her work while in progress and upon completion.
Education & Training
This employee must possess a high school diploma and experience in the operation of lighter trucks and motorized equipment. An equivalent combination of experience and training also will be considered.
Special Requirements
The Truck Driver must possess a valid Class B Motor Vehicle operator’s license.
Suggested Skills

  • Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in the operation of automotive vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the Town, including the location of streets.
  • Ability to operate trucks and other lighter motorized equipment safely and according to laws
    and regulations.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments and service automotive equipment.
  • Ability to learn the operation of heavier motorized equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under adverse climatic conditions.
