First Park – Maine’s High Technology Park – Located in Oakland
Once the “Tool Handle Capital of the World”, Oakland has witnessed the same decline in manufacturing as seen throughout Maine and across the nation. The North Wayne Tool Co., Diamond Match International & Cascade Woolen Mill have all closed their doors.
Oakland is also the birthplace of Central Maine Power and now serves as the home of FirstPark – Maine’s premiere Business & Technology Center. Located at Exit 127 off Interstate 95, FirstPark is a centrally located 285 acre development specifically built to house Maine’s emerging technological and information based industries. In addition to Oakland, there are 23 other communities that have pledged financial support for this venture including the service center communities of Waterville (adjacent to Oakland) and Maine’s capital, Augusta (20 miles).
With a relatively low tax rate, abundant land and close proximity to major transportation routes, Oakland is a community prepared to embrace appropriate commercial and industrial growth.
The town is a member of the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce. Small business planning and financing assistance are available through the Kennebec Valley Council of Governments with an office in nearby Fairfield.
