Parks and Recreation
About the Department
The Oakland Recreation Department began its full-time operation on July 1, 1990, after a vote of the townspeople at the spring Town Meeting. Since that time, the department has been pleased to offer a variety of special events, seasonal activities, sports programs, and senior citizen offerings. We are continuing to develop programming to try and reach out to all groups of our town.
Our greatest treasure to the department (other than the children of course!) is the protection of our 75 acres at Pleasant Point on McGrath Pond dedicated to the recreational enjoyment of our citizens.
ENJOY LIFE………. RECREATE!!

Our Parks
Oakland Waterfront Park
22 Old Belgrade Ave
Located on the northern end of Messalonskee Lake, the Oakland Waterfront Park is an easily accessible recreational space. The park has a boat launch, swim area, picnic tables, and grills. The park also has a beautiful 30’ Decagon Gazebo (650 Sq Ft). This hosts our wildly popular Summer Concert Series on Thursday nights throughout the summer. Also available for rent for events. Reach out to aparker@oaklandme.gov.

Pleasant Point Park
59 McGrath Pond Road
The centerpiece of our recreational properties, Pleasant Point Park is home to a wide variety of opportunities. Acquired in 1999, this 30 acre park has a beautiful beach area on the northern tip of McGrath Pond. The park has walking trails, a swim area, and a canoe/kayak launch. Pleasant Point also has athletic fields that host baseball games in the spring, soccer matches in the fall, and many pickup games/practices. Stop in and check out this truly special place!

Messalonskee Stream Trail
1115 Kennedy Memorial Drive
The Messalonskee Stream Trail was built in 2007 by Lester Kenway and Maine Conservation Corp. This 2.7-mile trail has two trailheads, one on KMD and the other on Rice Rips Road. On the KMD side, hikers will quickly see the ruins of the 1882 Cascade Woolen Mill, which represents a large part of Oakland’s history as a manufacturer. Continuing on, hikers will take a scenic walk through the woods along the riverbank of the stream.

Oakland Overlook
8 Smithfield Road
Oakland Overlook provides the most beautiful scenic views of all Oakland’s recreational spaces. Located at the top of the hill where High Street and Smithfield Road meet, the park has a picturesque view of over half of Maine’s fourteen 4,000-foot peaks! The space was opened in 2021 but is still being added to. The park has covered picnic tables, grills, Adirondack chairs, and green space perfect for a family outing. There is also a community garden set up, last year we planted lots of veggies in these gardens and in the past, they were available for rent. Stop in one evening for an amazing view of the sunset!

Wrigley Recreation Area
148 Fairfield Street
The newest addition to our recreation space is the Wrigley Recreation Area. Purchased in 2021, this 27-acre piece promises to host many new recreational activities and spaces. Soon to come will be a park and ride for our new ATV Trail. Stay tuned, as we continue to figure out and develop this area!
